c 517 BCE- Nehemiah completed the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem which had been in ruins since the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians 88 years earlier, as related in Nehemiah 6:15.

 

September 7, 1654-  A group of 23 Jews from Recife, Brazil arrived in New Amsterdam (later to be called New York). They were the pioneers of New York's Jewish community.

 

September 22, 1973-  The first Jewish U.S. Secretary of State, Henry A. Kissinger, was sworn in (on Shabbat!).
