The Hebrew Word

Har (Strong's #2022) means "a mountain". It is used 649 times in 497 verses in the Tanakh.

The Hebrew prefix "b" (b'har) is a generic prefix that serves as a preposition. Because of its generic nature this word b'har is sometimes translated as "on" the mountain, "in" the mountain, "at" the mountain, etc.

First use in Scripture

The first time har is used in Scripture is in Genesis 7:19.

Genesis 7:19

The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered.

Last use in Scripture

The last time har is used in Scripture is in Malachi 1:3.

Malachi 1:2-3

"I have loved you," says the LORD. But you say, "How have You loved us?" "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD. "Yet I have loved Jacob; but I have hated Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation and appointed his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness."
